Event Laundry Load Calculator — How It Works

Calculates how many washing machine loads are needed for a given amount of laundry.

How it works

  1. Enter the total weight of your laundry, in pounds.
  2. Enter your washing machine’s rated capacity, in pounds.
  3. The tool divides the laundry weight by the capacity and rounds up to give the number of loads needed, plus the average fill percentage.

Formula

Loads needed = ceil(Laundry weight ÷ Washer capacity)
Average fill % = (Laundry weight ÷ (Loads × Capacity)) × 100

Example

12 lbs of laundry in a 7 lb-capacity washer needs 2 loads, at about 86% average fill.

Why this matters

Overloading a washer reduces cleaning effectiveness and can strain the machine, while underloading wastes water and energy. Knowing the right number of loads helps balance both.
