Oil Absorption Calculator — How It Works

Estimates how much oil a fried food absorbs and the extra calories that adds.

How it works

  1. Enter the weight of the food before frying, in grams.
  2. Enter the estimated oil absorption rate as a percentage of the food’s weight.
  3. The tool calculates how many grams of oil the food absorbs during frying, and the extra calories that adds (oil has about 9 kcal per gram).

Formula

Oil absorbed (g) = Food weight (g) × (Absorption rate % ÷ 100)
Extra calories = Oil absorbed (g) × 9

Example

200 g of food fried with a 10% absorption rate absorbs 20 g of oil — adding about 180 kcal.

Notes

Oil absorption typically ranges from about 6% for well-drained, lightly battered foods to 15% or more for heavily battered, deep-fried foods. The actual amount depends on the food’s surface area, batter, frying temperature, and draining time.
