Family Tree Offset Calculator — How It Works
Estimates how many trees would be needed to offset a given amount of CO₂ emissions per year.
How it works
- Enter your estimated CO₂ emissions in kilograms per year (from a carbon footprint calculator, utility bill, or travel calculator).
- Enter how much CO₂ a single tree absorbs per year — about 21 kg is a commonly used average.
- The tool divides your emissions by the per-tree absorption rate to estimate how many trees would be needed to offset them.
Formula
Trees needed = CO₂ emissions (kg/year) ÷ CO₂ absorbed per tree (kg/year)
Example
4,000 kg of CO₂ per year, offset by trees absorbing 21 kg each per year, requires about 191 trees.
Notes
CO₂ absorption varies enormously by tree species, age, climate, and how “absorption” is measured (a young tree absorbs much less than a mature one, and absorption isn’t linear over a tree’s lifetime). This calculator gives a rough order-of-magnitude estimate, not a precise offset calculation.

FAQ
Is this free?
Yes — the Family Tree Offset Calculator runs entirely in your browser, no sign-up required.
Are these figures exact?
The calculator performs the math precisely from the numbers you enter, but real-world rates, emissions factors, and efficiency figures vary by location and equipment — treat results as planning estimates.
