Family Home Heating Cost Calculator — How It Works

Calculates the monthly and annual cost of home heating from energy usage.

How it works

  1. Enter your monthly heating energy use in kWh (from your utility bill, or convert from therms — 1 therm ≈ 29.3 kWh).
  2. Enter your energy rate per kWh.
  3. The tool multiplies usage by rate for the monthly cost, and multiplies that by 12 for an annual estimate.

Formula

Monthly cost = Monthly usage (kWh) × Rate per kWh
Annual cost = Monthly cost × 12

Example

800 kWh/month at $0.15/kWh costs $120/month, or $1,440/year.

Notes

Heating usage varies dramatically by season — multiplying a winter month’s cost by 12 will overestimate annual cost in most climates. Use an average monthly figure across the year for a more realistic annual estimate.

Are these figures exact?

The calculator performs the math precisely from the numbers you enter, but real-world rates, emissions factors, and efficiency figures vary by location and equipment — treat results as planning estimates.
