How does an acreage calculator work?

All you need is the width and length of the land, in any common length unit:

  • millimeters, centimeters, meters, kilometers
  • inches, feet, yards, miles
  • nautical miles

The calculator converts both dimensions to meters, multiplies them, and expresses the result in your chosen area unit — square meters, square feet, acres, hectares, square miles, and more.

The modern international acre is defined as 4,046.85642 square meters. That fixed size is why acre conversions use a precise multiplier rather than a round number.

Area = width × length (after both sides are in the same unit).

For example, a plot 100 ft wide and 200 ft long has an area of 20,000 sq ft, which is about 0.459 acres.

Hectares to acres

One hectare equals 10,000 square meters and is widely used in metric countries for farmland and large plots.

To convert hectares to acres, multiply by 2.471054:

acres = hectares × 2.471054

To go the other way — acres to hectares — divide by the same factor (or multiply by 0.404686).
